  I’m looking to develop an electronic control module for an old diesel engine that is no longer supported from the manufacturer. Would an AUTOSAR based system be appropriate?

  Yes it would be appropriate provided you are ready to pay(if outsourcing) to AUTOSAR experts or train yourself.
